RRB Group D Eligibility & PET: Weight Run, 1000m Timings & Medical Standards

Clear all eligibility hurdles for RRB Group D (RRC Level-1). Step-by-step breakdown of male and female Physical Efficiency Test (PET) benchmarks, sandbag weight carry rules, 1000-meter track standards, medical vision categories (A-2, B-1, C-1), and age relaxations.

Clearing the Computer Based Test (CBT) in RRB Group D is only the first challenge. Tens of thousands of candidates are disqualified annually during the subsequent Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Medical Examination.

Understanding the exact physical protocols, RFID timing mat technology, and departmental eyesight rules is essential to ensure final selection.

Educational & Age Eligibility Parameters

Candidates must fulfill both academic and age requirements as of the notification cut-off date:

1. Educational Qualifications

  • Mandatory Minimum: 10th Class (Matriculation) from a recognized board, OR
  • Technical Route: National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT, OR
  • ITI Trade Certificate: Approved ITI from NCVT/SCVT institutions in designated trades (Fitter, Turner, Electrician, Welder, Machinist, Wireman, etc.).

2. Age Limits & Category Relaxations

  • Unreserved / EWS: 18 to 33 Years
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 18 to 36 Years (3 Years relaxation)
  • SC / ST Candidates: 18 to 38 Years (5 Years relaxation)
  • Ex-Servicemen: Service duration + 3 years (up to 8 years additional for SC/ST)
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): 10 to 15 Years relaxation depending on social category.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET) Benchmarks

The PET is qualifying in nature, but failure in either component results in instantaneous disqualification. Testing is conducted under strict electronic sensor surveillance:

Test EventMale Candidate BenchmarkFemale / Transgender Benchmark
Event 1: Weight CarryLift and carry 35 kg of weight over a distance of 100 meters in 2 minutes in one single attempt without putting the weight down on the ground.Lift and carry 20 kg of weight over a distance of 100 meters in 2 minutes in one single attempt without putting the weight down on the ground.
Event 2: Distance RunRun a distance of 1,000 meters in 4 minutes and 15 seconds in one single attempt.Run a distance of 1,000 meters in 5 minutes and 40 seconds in one single attempt.

Critical Rules for the Sandbag Weight Run

The weight carry test utilizes heavy-duty synthetic bags filled with sand or gravel:

  1. Table Height Loading: Weight bags are kept on elevated waist-high tables. Candidates must pick up the bag independently without external assistance.
  2. Carrying Posture: You may carry the bag on your shoulder, hug it against your chest, or balance it behind your neck.
  3. The Ground Contact Rule: The moment any portion of the bag touches the ground before crossing the 100-meter finish sensor mat, the candidate is immediately flagged as failed. There are no second chances or re-runs.
  4. Time Window: 2 minutes is generous for 100 meters; a steady, balanced walk is far safer than sprinting, which risks losing grip or stumbling.

1,000-Meter Running Strategy & Electronic Chips

The running track is typically a 250-meter or 333-meter circular dirt or synthetic athletic circuit:

  • RFID Ankle Bands: Candidates wear tamper-proof RFID sensor chips tied to their ankles. Time is measured automatically when crossing the electronic timing mat, not by human stopwatch hand-signals.
  • Lap Counting Responsibility: The candidate is solely responsible for counting their own completed laps. Running one lap short leads to automatic failure.
  • Pacing Guideline for Men (4:15 target): Aim for 60 seconds per 250 meters. Avoid exhausting yourself in the initial 200-meter rush.
  • Pacing Guideline for Women (5:40 target): Aim for 80 to 85 seconds per 250 meters. Maintaining consistent aerobic rhythm ensures qualification comfortably.

Railway Medical Vision Categories (A-2, B-1, C-1)

Railway medical examinations are conducted by senior zonal railway doctors and are among the strictest in the government sector:

PET Exemptions for PwBD & CCAA Candidates

  • PwBD Exemption: Persons with Benchmark Disabilities are 100% exempt from the Physical Efficiency Test. Their merit is compiled directly from CBT marks, followed by customized medical evaluation.
  • CCAA Weightage: Course Completed Act Apprentices who received apprenticeship training in railway establishments receive 1/3rd weightage of their NCVT marks in the final CBT calculation, and are completely exempt from PET.
