The Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) recruitment, conducted centrally by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under CEN notifications, is the gateway to operating electric and diesel locomotives across the vast Indian Railways network.

ALPs assist senior Loco Pilots in piloting passenger, freight, express, and premium high-speed trains (including Vande Bharat and Rajdhani Expresses), demanding extraordinary vigilance, technical aptitude, and flawless medical fitness.

Who is an Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP)?

The Assistant Loco Pilot is a technical railway operating specialist stationed directly inside the locomotive cab. Working as co-driver to the Loco Pilot, the ALP monitors railway signals, tracks trackside speed restrictions, maintains vigilance control devices, and rectifies minor locomotive faults during transit.

Because rail transport operates 24x7 in all weather conditions, ALPs undergo rigorous simulator training at Zonal Railway Training Institutes (ZRTIs) before commencing active footplate duties.

Daily Duties & Operating Responsibilities

The life of an Assistant Loco Pilot revolves around strict operating rules governed by the General and Subsidiary Rules (G&SR) of Indian Railways:

  1. Locomotive Inspection & Cab Sign-On: Inspecting oil levels, brake cylinder pressure, pantograph mechanisms, safety flasher lights, and air brake continuity prior to engine departure from locomotive sheds.
  2. Signal Call-Out: Calling out aspect names of every trackside signal (Green, Double Yellow, Yellow, Red) aloud to the Loco Pilot and acknowledging whistle codes.
  3. Safety Vigilance: Operating the Vigilance Control Device (VCD) pedal every 60 seconds to prove alertness; failure automatically triggers emergency train braking.
  4. En-Route Troubleshooting: Handling minor electrical tripping, auxiliary circuit resets, and mechanical pipe leakages during unplanned wayside stops.
  5. Exchange of Hand Signals: Exchanging green flags or hand lamps with station staff, guard brake vans, and passing trains to verify train integrity and clear tail-boards.
