Computer Based Tests (CBT) have replaced paper examinations across major recruitment boards including SSC, RRB, IBPS, and NTA. Learn how the exam software operates so technical unfamiliarity never costs you marks.

1. What is a Computer Based Test (CBT)?

A Computer Based Test (CBT) is an examination administered electronically on a dedicated computer workstation connected to a secure Local Area Network (LAN) at designated testing centers. Instead of receiving a printed question booklet and filling an OMR sheet, questions appear on your monitor, and you record responses using a mouse.

CBT exams are hosted on closed intranets without internet connectivity to prevent digital malpractices. All candidate interactions are logged, timestamped, and transmitted directly to central evaluation servers.

2. The On-Screen Question Palette: Color Codes Decoded

On the right side of your CBT screen, a numerical Question Palette displays the real-time status of every question in the paper. Standardized color codes include:

1
Silver / Grey: Not Visited yet.
2
Orange / Red: Visited but Not Answered.
3
Green: Answered (Saved & Evaluated).
4
Purple: Marked for Review (No Answer).
5
Purple with Small Green Circle: Answered AND Marked for Review (Will be evaluated!).

3. Crucial Navigation Buttons & Best Practices

Save & Next (Crucial!):

Selecting a radio button alone DOES NOT save your response. You MUST click "Save & Next" to register the answer. If you simply click another question on the palette without clicking Save & Next, your selected option is discarded.

Clear Response:

If you selected an option and later decide you are uncertain, click "Clear Response" to unmark it completely and protect yourself from negative marking.

Mark for Review & Next:

Flags the question so you can quickly jump back to it during the final minutes. Use this for questions where you have eliminated two options but need extra calculation time.

Important Candidate Advisory & Verification Protocol
