The IBPS Clerk (CRP Clerical) examination is the largest recruitment channel for foundational banking operations across public sector banks in India.
Every year, thousands of graduate candidates are selected for front-desk and transaction roles across participating nationalized banks, benefiting from stable state-level postings, predictable hours, and clear promotional paths.
What is the IBPS Clerk Examination?
The IBPS Clerk examination selects candidates for clerical cadre positions—typically designated as Customer Service Associates (CSA) or Single Window Operators (SWO).
Unlike the IBPS PO examination which recruits officers for an all-India cadre, IBPS Clerk vacancies are released strictly on a State-by-State and Union Territory basis. Candidates compete only against applicants from their chosen state, and selected candidates are posted within that state.
Participating Public Sector Banks
The 11 nationalized banks that recruit clerks through IBPS include:
- Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra
- Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Bank

State-Wise Vacancies & Local Language Rules

- State-Level Quotas: Vacancies are notified state-wise. Cut-offs vary across states based on local applicant volume and available seats.
- Language Proficiency Test (LPT): Candidates must be able to read, write, and speak the designated official regional language of the state they apply for.
- Exemption: If your 10th or 12th standard marksheet confirms you studied the regional language, you are exempt from the LPT.
Job Profile & Work-Life Balance
- Core Responsibilities: Handling cash deposits and disbursements, issuing demand drafts, clearing cheques, onboarding customers for savings accounts, and processing debit card applications.
- Fixed Working Hours: Shifts typically run from 9:45 AM to 5:30 PM with standard lunch breaks. Unlike managerial officers, clerks are generally free from late evening office commitments.
- Leave Entitlement: 12 Casual Leaves, 15 Privilege Leaves (PL), 30 Sick Leaves per year, along with alternate Saturday off-days (2nd and 4th Saturdays).
Promotions: Clerk to Scale-I Officer
Joining as an IBPS Clerk provides structured opportunities to transition into managerial officer cadres:
- Internal Fast-Track Channel: After 2 to 3 years of service, clerks can sit for the internal written test and interview for promotion to Officer Scale-I (Assistant Manager).
- Seniority Channel: Clerks can also earn promotion through service seniority after 5 to 6 years of service.
- Certification Acceleration: Clearing JAIIB (Junior Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers) and CAIIB exams not only adds immediate financial increments to basic pay, but also shortens the service period required for officer promotion.
