The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) Common Recruitment Process for Probationary Officers and Management Trainees (CRP PO/MT) is the primary national examination for executive banking employment in India.

Through this centralized assessment, IBPS supplies managerial leadership to 11 premier Public Sector Banks (PSBs), offering stable careers with nationwide mobility.

What is the IBPS PO/MT Examination?

Before 2011, every nationalized bank conducted its own independent recruitment tests, forcing aspirants to apply for dozens of individual exams annually. IBPS centralized this framework into a single unified testing system.

Candidates appear for one common examination process and indicate their preferred order of banks. Upon clearing all stages, candidates are allotted to a specific bank based on merit ranking and preference choices.

Participating Public Sector Banks (PSBs)

The IBPS PO examination recruits officers for 11 prominent nationalized banks:

  1. Punjab National Bank (PNB)
  2. Bank of Baroda (BoB)
  3. Canara Bank
  4. Union Bank of India
  5. Bank of India (BoI)
  6. Indian Bank
  7. Central Bank of India
  8. Indian Overseas Bank (IOB)
  9. UCO Bank
  10. Bank of Maharashtra
  11. Punjab & Sind Bank

(Note: State Bank of India conducts its own separate recruitment and does not participate in IBPS PO).

Three-Stage Selection Architecture

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (100 Marks | Screening Only)
       ↓
Stage 2: Main Examination (Objective 200 Marks + Descriptive 25 Marks)
       ↓
Stage 3: Common Personal Interview (100 Marks | 80:20 Merit Weightage)
       ↓
Provisional Allotment to Allocated Bank
  1. Phase 1: Preliminary Examination: 100 objective questions covering English Language (30), Quantitative Aptitude (35), and Reasoning Ability (35). Total time is 60 minutes with a mandatory 20 minutes allotted to each section. Marks are not counted in the final merit list.
  2. Phase 2: Main Examination: 155 objective questions (200 marks) testing Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, and English Language. Followed immediately by a Descriptive English Test (25 marks / 30 minutes) comprising one Essay and one Formal Letter.
  3. Phase 3: Common Interview: Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by a joint board coordinated by IBPS and participating bank executives (100 marks).
  4. Final Combined Score: Compiled using an 80:20 ratio (80% from Mains examination score + 20% from Interview score).

Bank Preference & Merit-Based Allotment

When submitting the online application, candidates must rank the 11 participating banks in order of personal preference:

  • Merit-Driven Allotment: High scorers are allocated their first or second bank choice.
  • Irrevocable Order: Once declared, preference rankings cannot be modified. If a candidate is allotted their 4th preference bank based on merit, they cannot request a transfer to another bank with lower cut-offs.
  • Reporting & Appointment: Following provisional allotment by IBPS, the individual bank conducts document verification, medical tests, and issues appointment letters.

Exam Pattern, Sectional Timings & Negative Marking

Two critical rules distinguish IBPS exams from SBI:

  1. Strict Sectional Cut-Offs: Unlike SBI PO, candidates in IBPS PO must achieve a minimum qualifying score in each section individually, in addition to clearing the overall aggregate cut-off. Failing a single section disqualifies the candidate.
  2. Negative Marking: Every incorrect answer incurs a penalty of 1/4th (0.25) marks in both Prelims and Mains.
  3. Sectional Timing: Each section is allotted a fixed time window. Unused time cannot be transferred to other sections.

Career Growth in Nationalized Banks

Probationary Officers join at Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I):

  • Scale-I: Probationary Officer / Assistant Manager (Induction)
  • Scale-II: Manager (after 2 to 3 years)
  • Scale-III: Senior Manager (handling larger branches or credit cells)
  • Scale-IV: Chief Manager (regional heads)
  • Scale-V: Assistant General Manager (AGM)
  • Scale-VI: Deputy General Manager (DGM)
  • Scale-VII: General Manager (GM)
  • Executive Director (ED) & Managing Director (MD / CEO): Cleared through the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) for top public sector leadership.
