State Bank of India (SBI) enforces precise eligibility benchmarks for its flagship Probationary Officer (PO) examination. Unlike many government competitive exams where attempts are unlimited until the age boundary, SBI PO maintains strict attempt counting regulations.
Failing to understand these parameters can result in automatic rejection during the interview or document verification stages, even if you secure top marks in the written test.
Educational Qualifications & Graduation Rules
1. Basic Academic Qualification
- Candidates must hold a Graduation Degree in any discipline (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.E./B.Tech, BBA, BCA, MBBS, etc.) from a recognized University incorporated by an Act of Central or State Legislature in India.
- Any equivalent qualification recognized as such by the Central Government is also accepted.
2. Is There a Minimum Percentage Requirement?
- NO minimum percentage is required. Unlike past corporate banking standards, candidates with a simple passing grade (third division or pass class) in their graduation are 100% eligible.
- CGPA or letter grades must be converted into percentage terms according to the certified formula of the issuing university.
3. Final Year Candidates Provision
- Students who are in the final year or final semester of graduation are fully eligible to apply provisionally.
- However, if shortlisted for the interview, they must produce authentic documentary proof (provisional certificate or final marksheet) demonstrating that their graduation was completed on or before the cut-off date specified in that recruitment year's advertisement.
Age Limits & Category-Wise Relaxations
Candidates must be between 21 and 30 years of age as of the cut-off reference date (typically the 1st of April of the recruitment year):
- Lower Age Limit: Must have completed 21 years of age.
- Upper Age Limit: Must not have exceeded 30 years of age.
| Social Category | Maximum Age Relaxation | Effective Upper Age Limit |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | No relaxation | 30 Years |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 Years | 33 Years |
| SC / ST Candidates | 5 Years | 35 Years |
| PwBD (General / EWS) | 10 Years | 40 Years |
| PwBD (OBC-NCL) | 13 Years | 43 Years |
| PwBD (SC / ST) | 15 Years | 45 Years |
| Ex-Servicemen / Commissioned Officers | 5 Years | 35 Years |
Number of Attempts: How Attempts Are Counted
SBI enforces a cap on the maximum number of times an individual can sit for the exam:
| Category | Permissible Number of Attempts |
|---|---|
| General / EWS | 4 Attempts |
| General / EWS (PwBD) | 7 Attempts |
| OBC / OBC (PwBD) | 7 Attempts |
| SC / ST / SC-ST (PwBD) | No Restriction (Unlimited within age limit) |
How Exactly is an Attempt Counted?
- Appearing in the Preliminary Examination is NOT counted as an attempt.
- An attempt is counted only if the candidate actually appears in the Main Examination (Phase 2).
- Merely submitting an online application, downloading the admit card, or sitting for Phase 1 (Prelims) does not consume an attempt.
CIBIL Credit Score & Character Verification
In modern banking recruitments, financial integrity is evaluated alongside academic credentials:
- Minimum CIBIL Score: Candidates must maintain a minimum CIBIL score of 650 or higher at the time of joining.
- Loan Defaults: Candidates with an adverse credit record, default on educational loans, or unpaid credit card balances must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or regularize the debt before appointment.
- Police Record: Candidates against whom adverse police reports, ongoing criminal trials, or disciplinary dismissals from prior public/private institutions exist are disqualified.
Nationality & Domicile Parameters
An applicant must be either:
- A citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who arrived in India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or East African countries with the intention of permanently settling in India (under valid certificate of eligibility issued by the Govt of India).
