Eligibility criteria are legally binding service conditions. Even if a candidate ranks first in a competitive examination, failure to satisfy any prescribed eligibility clause as on the crucial cut-off date leads to immediate disqualification without recourse.
1. Why There Is No "Single Universal" Eligibility Rule
Many candidates mistakenly assume that all government exams follow the same rules. In reality, every recruitment notification is framed in accordance with the specific Recruitment Rules (RRs) of the participating ministry, department, or state government cadre.
While general education benchmarks (10th, 12th, or Bachelor's degree) are common, the exact age brackets, subject restrictions, physical fitness benchmarks, and experience conditions differ substantially between posts.
2. Core Dimensions of Government Job Eligibility
Degrees must be conferred by universities recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Degrees obtained via recognized distance education (IGNOU, State Open Universities) are equivalent to regular degrees. For most administrative exams, a simple pass is sufficient, while technical roles may mandate specific branch specializations.
Aspirants must fall within the minimum (commonly 18 or 21 years) and maximum age (27, 30, or 32 years for UR). The calculation is strictly anchored to a cut-off date published in the notice. For full details on relaxations, see our Government Job Age Limit & Relaxation Guide.
Candidates must be citizens of India, subjects of Nepal/Bhutan, or eligible Tibetan refugees. Central Government recruitments are open to all Indian citizens regardless of state origin. Conversely, State PSC recruitments may require state domicile certificates or mandatory proficiency in the official regional language (e.g. Punjabi for PSSSB, Marathi for MPSC).
Uniformed services (Police, Army, Paramilitary, Customs, Forest) enforce mandatory height, chest expansion, vision (distant 6/6, no color blindness), and physical endurance benchmarks. Desk roles require standard sound health without physical measurement hurdles.
3. Can Final Year Students Apply?
A frequent dilemma for college students is whether they can apply before receiving their degree. The answer depends strictly on the date of result declaration relative to the recruitment's crucial cut-off date:
- If your final university exam result is declared on or before the crucial cut-off date, you are fully eligible, even if your physical convocation degree arrives later (a provisional degree or final mark sheet serves as proof).
- If your results will be declared after the crucial cut-off date, your candidature will be rejected during Document Verification, even if you clear all exam stages with top marks.
