The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts the Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) examination to recruit graduate and undergraduate candidates for critical non-technical executive, operational, and clerical positions across Indian Railways zones.

Because RRB NTPC covers diverse positions ranging from Pay Level 2 (Junior Clerk cum Typist) to Pay Level 6 (Station Master and Commercial Apprentice), the selection mechanism incorporates both universal screening filters and specialized skill assessments tailored to individual job profiles.

RRB NTPC Selection Architecture

The overall selection sequence spans four sequential stages:

  1. Computer Based Test 1 (CBT-1): Common preliminary screening examination for all graduate and 12th-pass posts.
  2. Computer Based Test 2 (CBT-2): Separate level-specific examinations (Level 2, Level 3, Level 5, Level 6) determining core merit ranking.
  3. Skill / Aptitude Assessment:
  • CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test): Mandatory only for Station Master (Level 6) and Traffic Assistant (Level 4).
  • Typing Skill Test (TST): Mandatory for clerical and account assistant posts across Level 2 and Level 5.
  • Direct Selection (No Skill Test): Commercial Apprentice (Level 6), Goods Train Manager (Level 5), and Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (Level 5).
  1. Document Verification (DV) & Medical Examination: Final physical authentication and strict departmental medical fitness evaluation.

Stage 1: CBT 1 (Screening Test) Pattern

CBT 1 is qualifying in nature. Its primary objective is shortlisting candidates for CBT 2 at a ratio of approximately 15 times the category-wise vacancies for each notified post group.

Key Rules of CBT 1:

  • Marks scored in CBT 1 are normalized to account for difficulty variations across multiple shifts. Read our guide on Normalization in Government Exams for calculation methodologies.
  • The normalized score of CBT 1 is utilized exclusively for screening to Stage 2; it is not added to the final merit compilation.

Stage 2: CBT 2 (Merit Test) Structure by Pay Level

Candidates who clear the normalized cut-off for their applied levels appear for CBT 2. If an applicant qualifies for multiple pay levels (Level 2, 3, 5, and 6), they must sit for a distinct CBT 2 examination for each level.

Scoring Weightage:

  • For non-skill posts (Goods Train Manager, Senior Commercial Clerk, Commercial Apprentice): 100% weightage is derived directly from CBT 2 normalized scores.
  • For Station Master / Traffic Assistant: CBT 2 carries 70% weightage, with the remaining 30% weightage evaluated from the CBAT.

Stage 3A: Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

The CBAT (Psychometric Test) evaluates mental alertness, spatial orientation, perceptual speed, and decision-making capabilities required for rail safety:

  • Target Posts: Station Master (Pay Level 6) and Traffic Assistant (Pay Level 4).
  • Candidate Pool: 8 times the notified vacancies are called based on CBT 2 merit.
  • Battery of Tests: Comprises 5 distinct sub-test batteries (Intelligence Test, Selective Attention Test, Spatial Scanning Test, Information Ordering Test, and Aptitude Battery).
  • Qualifying Standard: Candidates must achieve a minimum T-Score of 42 marks in each test battery separately, regardless of SC, ST, OBC, or EWS reservation categories. No relaxation is permitted in CBAT passing marks.
  • Medium: Conducted only in English and Hindi without negative marking.

Stage 3B: Typing Skill Test (TST)

Candidates called for typing tests must demonstrate speed and keyboard accuracy on computer consoles provided at designated exam centres:

Minimum Required Speed30 Words Per Minute (wpm)25 Words Per Minute (wpm)

Posts requiring Typing Skill Test include Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist, and Accounts Clerk cum Typist.

Document Verification & Medical Standard

Final allocation combines normalized CBT 2 scores (plus CBAT marks for SM/TA) against available zone quotas:

  1. Document Verification (1:1 Ratio): Shortlisted candidates must present original matriculation certificates, degree marksheets, caste credentials, and non-creamy layer declarations.
  2. Medical Examination: Railway medical officers conduct exhaustive physical tests. Station Masters require the rigorous A-2 Medical Classification, while Goods Guards require A-3 Classification. Candidates with corrective laser eye surgery (LASIK) are disqualified for safety-category posts.
