⚡ UGC NET December 2026 Application Window Active
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released the detailed Information Bulletin and opened the online registration portal for the UGC NET December 2026 examination. Conducted on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), this national-level Computer Based Test (CBT) determines eligibility for Indian nationals seeking Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), appointment as Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges, and admission to Ph.D. programmes.
According to the official Public Notice issued on 08 October 2026, online applications are invited across 87 subjects nationwide. Candidates can complete their registration on the official NTA portal from 08 October 2026 to 28 October 2026 (up to 11:50 PM). The nationwide examination is scheduled to be held from 14 December 2026 to 19 December 2026, with 20 and 21 December earmarked as buffer dates if required.
📌 Essential Clarification: National Eligibility Test vs Direct Recruitment
Candidates should note that UGC NET is a national eligibility and screening examination, not a conventional government job recruitment with a fixed vacancy count. Qualifying UGC NET confers statutory eligibility for Assistant Professor recruitment and Ph.D. admissions across Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India, while actual appointments depend on subsequent individual advertisements issued by universities, colleges, and state commissions.

What is UGC NET?
The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is a standardized national assessment conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It assesses the academic competence of Indian postgraduates and four-year bachelor's degree scholars to determine whether they meet statutory benchmarks for entry-level university teaching, national research fellowships, and doctoral admissions.
Unlike localized departmental recruitments, UGC NET is administered twice every year (typically in June and December cycles) across humanities, social sciences, computer science, management, commerce, and environmental science disciplines. Science disciplines such as Physical, Chemical, Life, and Mathematical Sciences are tested under the separate Joint CSIR-UGC NET examination.

2. Final-Year / Result-Awaited Master's Candidates
Candidates who are in the final year of their Master's programme or whose qualifying examination results have been delayed may apply provisionally. However, their candidature is strictly subject to the following statutory conditions:
- For JRF & Assistant Professor (Categories 1 & 2): Such candidates must complete their Master's degree or equivalent with the requisite percentage (55% or 50% as applicable) within two years from the date of declaration of the UGC-NET result, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.
- For Ph.D. Admission Only (Category 3): Candidates must complete their qualifying Master's degree with the requisite percentage within one year from the date of declaration of the UGC-NET result.
3. Special Provision for Four-Year / 8-Semester Bachelor's Degree Holders
Under the National Education Policy (NEP) framework reflected in the official Information Bulletin, candidates pursuing or holding a Four-Year / 8-Semester Bachelor's Degree are eligible to appear in UGC-NET, subject to critical constraints:
- Minimum Marks: Must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.
- Relaxation: A 5% marks relaxation (or equivalent grade relaxation) is allowed for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwD, and other eligible categories as per UGC regulations.
- Permitted Outcomes: Four-year Bachelor's degree candidates are eligible ONLY for the award of JRF and for admission to Ph.D. (Categories 1 and 3).
- Important Ineligibility Clause: Four-year Bachelor's degree candidates are NOT eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor on the basis of their four-year undergraduate qualification alone.
- Discipline Flexibility: Candidates holding a 4-year undergraduate degree are permitted to appear in any UGC-NET subject in which they desire to pursue their Ph.D., irrespective of the discipline of their undergraduate degree.
4. Official Subject Selection Rule
Candidates with a Master's qualification are advised to appear only in the subject of their Post-Graduation. If a candidate's exact Post-Graduation subject is not included in the list of 87 subjects (Annexure II of the Information Bulletin), they may appear in a closely related subject permitted under official guidelines.

How Ph.D. Admission Works for Category 2 and Category 3:
- Universities and Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) use UGC-NET scores as an entrance test in lieu of conducting their own entrance examinations.
- 70% Weightage: Allotted to marks obtained in UGC-NET.
- 30% Weightage: Allotted to the interview / viva-voce conducted by the concerned University or institution.
- 1-Year Validity: For Ph.D. admission purposes under Categories 2 and 3, UGC-NET marks remain valid for one year from the date of result declaration.

UGC NET Qualification & 6% Result Methodology
NTA determines the final qualifying status through a strict two-stage procedural methodology:
Step 1: Minimum Aggregate Consideration Threshold
Candidates must secure at least 40% aggregate marks (for General / Unreserved / General-EWS) or 35% aggregate marks (for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwD, Third Gender) across both papers combined to be considered in the qualification pool.
* Note: Scoring 40% or 35% does NOT mean a candidate has qualified. It only makes them eligible for consideration in the competitive merit list.
Step 2: The 6% Qualifying Formula for Assistant Professor
The total number of candidates qualified for eligibility for Assistant Professor equals 6% of the candidates who appeared in both papers of the NET. These qualifying slots are distributed across categories following the Government of India reservation policy (SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10%, PwD 5% horizontal).
Step 3: JRF Slot Allocation
Out of the candidates qualified for Assistant Professor eligibility who opted for JRF, a select merit pool is identified for the award of Junior Research Fellowship using the formula prescribed in the official bulletin.

• Inaccurate Category Selection for 4-Year UG
Four-year Bachelor's degree holders must not apply for Assistant Professor eligibility.

Payment receipt alone is insufficient; save and print the multi-page Application Confirmation Page.
