⚡ Official Examination Notification: The Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), Tamil Nadu, has released Notification No. 02/2026 inviting online applications for the Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET) – Paper-I and Paper-II. This special Teacher Eligibility Test is conducted strictly for in-service working teachers appointed on or before 01.09.2025 as Secondary Grade Teachers (SGT), Graduate Teachers (BT Assistants), Block Resource Teacher Educators (BRTEs), and other equivalent cadres across Government, Government-Aided, and recognized unaided private institutions in Tamil Nadu.
Mandatory Legal Compliance: In accordance with the directives of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India and Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act norms, possessing a valid TET certificate is a statutory requirement for all working teachers. TNTET 2026 offers in-service teachers a dedicated pathway to acquire permanent certification with Lifetime Validity.
Examination Blueprint: The offline OMR-based test is scheduled for 20 December 2026 in two shifts: Paper-II in the Forenoon session (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM) and Paper-I in the Afternoon session (2:30 PM to 5:30 PM). Each paper consists of 150 Multiple Choice Questions (150 Marks) with No Negative Marking.
1. Statutory Mandate & Supreme Court Ruling Behind Special TNTET 2026
Why clearing TNTET Paper-I or Paper-II is legally mandatory for existing in-service teaching personnel.
Under Section 23(1) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE), 2009, and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) notifications, any person appointed as an elementary school teacher must possess the minimum TET qualification. In subsequent legal proceedings regarding working teachers appointed under time-scale or consolidated pay:
Supreme Court Directives for Service Continuance
Judicial pronouncements affirmed that teachers serving in government, municipal, aided, and private schools must clear TET within the granted transition windows. Notification 02/2026 is specifically organized to provide an official qualifying opportunity to fulfill this legal benchmark without interrupting ongoing service.
Permanent Lifetime Certificate Validity
As per Government Orders following NCTE guidelines, TNTET eligibility certificates now carry Lifetime Validity. Once a working teacher passes Paper-I or Paper-II, they are permanently exempt from appearing in future eligibility assessments.
