1. Organization Overview: Strategic Role & Counter-Terror Mandate of the NIA
Elite federal investigation capabilities safeguarding national sovereignty, integrity, and public security.
Constituted under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 by an Act of Parliament following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) serves as the central counter-terrorism law enforcement agency of the Republic of India. Functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the agency possesses concurrent jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute offenses affecting the sovereignty, security, and integrity of India, security of State, and friendly relations with foreign States.
Concurrent Pan-India Jurisdiction
Unlike state police forces whose legal mandate is confined by territorial boundaries, NIA officers exercise full police powers across the entire territory of India without requiring prior state government consent for scheduled offenses.
Specialized Counter-Terror & Cyber Forensics
Mandated to investigate complex inter-state and trans-national terror networks, terror financing, high-denomination counterfeit currency syndicates, weapons proliferation, cyber-terrorism, and atomic/nuclear offenses.
