Police Constable recruitment drives account for hundreds of thousands of public service vacancies annually across India.

Because Police and Public Order are State Subjects under the Seventh Schedule (List II) of the Constitution of India, every state government (e.g., Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan) conducts its own police recruitment through dedicated state police recruitment boards (such as UPPRPB, MPESB, CSBC Bihar).

Concurrently, Central Armed Police Forces (BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB) recruit constables centrally through the SSC GD Constable Examination.

The Four-Stage Selection Architecture

While the sequencing of stages varies slightly between states, most recruitments adhere to a standardized multi-tier framework:

Stage 1: Written Examination (OMR or Computer Based Test)
                           ↓
Stage 2: Physical Standards Test (PST - Height & Chest Measurement)
                           ↓
Stage 3: Physical Efficiency Test (PET - Timed Endurance Running)
                           ↓
Stage 4: Document Verification (DV) & Biometric Authentication
                           ↓
Stage 5: Detailed Medical Examination (DME)
                           ↓

Stage-by-Stage Breakdown

1. Written Examination

The written examination evaluates foundational literacy, numeracy, and awareness:

  • General Knowledge / State GK: History, geography, culture, economy, and administrative structure of the home state, alongside national current affairs.
  • General Hindi or Regional Language: Grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, and comprehension (tested extensively in Hindi heartland states).
  • Numerical & Mental Ability: Arithmetic calculations, percentages, profit and loss, time and distance.
  • Mental Aptitude & Reasoning: Coding-decoding, direction sense, public interest, law and order situations, and logical reasoning.

2. Physical Standards Test (PST)

Administered using digital height stadiometers and chest sensors. Candidates who fall even 0.5 cm below the prescribed minimum height are disqualified. For male candidates, unexpanded chest and minimum 5 cm expansion are verified.

3. Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

Conducted on outdoor track circuits using tamper-proof RFID sensor timing chips tied to candidates' ankles. Timings are automatically registered when candidates step on electronic sensor mats.

4. Document Verification (DV) & Medical

Authentication of original 10th/12th marksheets, state domicile certificates, caste credentials (OBC non-creamy layer, SC/ST, EWS), and character references. The subsequent medical test examines vision, flat foot, knock knees, and hearing.
